The Pest Toolkit: UV + PCO Technology
The Future of Clean Rooms, Clean Plants & Clean Medicine
Powdery mildew (PM), thrips, mites, fungus gnats, airborne microbes, and contaminants have challenged cultivators for decades. Today, a new era of chemical-free Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is redefining how top-tier facilities protect yield and quality.
The combination of targeted UV light and NASA-developed PCO (Photocatalytic Oxidation) + Plasma air sanitation technology is now one of the most effective, science-backed solutions for both preventing and eliminating microbial and pest pressure.
And Mammoth has been leading this UV + PCO revolution since 2018.
What Are PCO & Plasma? (NASA-Inspired Technology)
PCO (Photocatalytic Oxidation) — NASA-Developed Air Cleaning
PCO uses UV light + a titanium dioxide catalyst (TiO₂) to create highly reactive oxidizing molecules that destroy organic contaminants at the molecular level.
PCO destroys:
-
Mold spores
-
PM spores
-
VOCs
-
Odors
-
Bacteria
-
Airborne pathogens
PCO is based on technology originally developed by NASA for long-duration space missions, where clean air is critical.
Plasma (Cold Plasma / Bipolar Ionization)
Plasma generates positive and negative ions that:
-
Bind to airborne microbes
-
Break down their membranes
-
Cause them to clump (making HEPA capture easier)
-
Reduce mold and bacterial load
Plasma + PCO together create a "capture AND destroy" effect for room-wide sanitation.
Quick Guide: UVA, UVB, UVC — What’s the Difference?
| UV Type | Nanometer Range | Purpose in Cultivation |
|---|---|---|
| UVA | 315–400 nm | Plant expression, anthocyanins, terpenes |
| UVB | 280–315 nm | PM suppression, immune response, resin upregulation |
| UVC | 100–280 nm | Microbial kill (room resets only — dangerous to plants & humans if used improper) |
Why UV + PCO Works: Backed by Peer-Reviewed Science
437 nm Near-UV (Violet Light)
“Violet–blue light around 405–440 nm significantly reduces bacterial and fungal loads via reactive oxygen species (ROS).”
— Maclean et al., 2014
UVB vs. Powdery Mildew
“UV-B exposure decreases germination of powdery mildew and suppresses sporulation.”
— Janisiewicz et al., 2016
Night Treatments = Maximum PM Kill
“At night, powdery mildew loses antioxidant protection, making it highly vulnerable to UV-B.”
— Schuerger et al., 2003
UVC Kill Rate
“UVC inactivates >99.9% of fungal spores, bacteria, and viruses with extremely short exposures.”
— Kowalski, UVGI Handbook, 2009
PCO + Plasma Findings
-
PCO effectively destroys airborne microbes under real airflow conditions.
-
Plasma provides high microbial kill through ion-based oxidation.
-
Combined, they reduce VOCs, odors, spores, and bioload.
This is not marketing. It’s pure science.

When UV Works Best (Cornell + USDA Data)
Night = Maximum PM Kill
PM loses antioxidant protection at night.
Recommended Timing
-
10–60 min before lights on
-
10–30 min after lights off
Use Cases
-
UVB = With plants
-
UVC = Empty room resets only
Plants also thrive under 13/11, supported by Mammoth trials.
Benefits of UV + PCO for Growers
✔ Strong PM suppression
UV damages PM DNA; PCO destroys spores completely.
✔ Pest reduction
Thrips, mites, gnats, and microbial vectors suppressed.
✔ Cleaner air → cleaner plants
Less airborne contamination = cleaner COAs.
✔ Higher plant energy + better expression
Plants not fighting pathogens redirect energy to growth.
✔ Chemical-free IPM
No residues. No flavor impact. No COA risk.
Just physics and biology.
Safety First: UV Is Powerful — Respect It
Our Safety Recommendations
-
Use UVC only for empty rooms
-
Always use radar shutoff
-
PPE required: face shield, gloves, long sleeves
-
Avoid exposing eyes or skin
Clean Rooms → Clean Plants → Clean Medicine
UV + PCO + Plasma are now the new standard in modern IPM.
For less than $600, you can protect an entire room.
Lower microbial counts = better growth, louder terps, higher quality, and clean COAs.
Wondering what is life on the bulbs and how much to replace
How much would those wands be shipped to Canada?
Hello,
I’m looking for a technology provider that would be willing to develop and install a UVLED PCO solution for a printing company in Montreal. Our client needs to reduce its VOC emissions and we are seeking an energy efficient solution. VOC mainly come from solvent (Ethylene glycol monopropyl ether, N-propyl alcohol and N-propyl acetate). They have a 15,000 CFM exhaust system. I think we would need to develop a “reaction chamber” in which we would have many steel plates covered with TiO2 and UVLED, but I have no way of estimating the dimensions (and costs) of suche a system.
Could you help with that?
Thanks!
Good afternoon what is the price and information on your
UV-PCO?
